ON VIDEO: the origins of New Georges
ALL the theaters we worked in in our first 20 years
return visit to the first Room!

New Georges was founded in 1992 by women actors confronting the scarcity of substantive roles for women. The women we knew were strong, witty, complex; women in plays seemed objectified and diminished. And where were the plays that dealt with the things we cared about? By producing plays by women, we thought, we could create opportunity and herald a new perspective.

We figured once we met one woman playwright, we'd be on the trail of more. It soon became evident that no such network existed — and from what playwrights were telling us, it wasn't for lack of need. Creating that community became a major goal, and a cornerstone of New Georges’ quick evolution from an actors’ company to an organization with a broader mission.

And the rest, as they say…

(Some of these pages are still very much under construction, and there are a few we haven't even made yet!  Please forgive us, they'll be more complete SOON — and if there are holes you can help us fill, be in touch!)
