Flashback, June 2006: after a two-year development process, New Georges produces DEAD CITY, Sheila Callaghan’s contemporary adaptation of Ulysses, directed by Daniella Topol, at brand-new 3LD Art & Technology Center – it’s the first production to open there, and we took full advantage of the space’s mission (multimedia magic and long residencies!) in order to make the kind of show we’d never seen before, let alone been part of.
“A revelatory experience,” says Sheila — and one that marked a turning point for all of us, a critically-acclaimed, sold-out, gotta-get-down-there extended run. (The New York Times follows Sheila around for Bloomsday!)
Flash forward! Exactly 10 years later, we’re back at 3LD this June with another long-simmering Sheila/Daniella project — WATER — now in collaboration with associate playwright Liza Birkenmeier and a dream design team that includes Louisa Thompson, Barbara Samuels, Aaron Meicht and Cory Einbinder.
WATER won’t premiere until June 2017, in a co-production with 3LD as part of a bigger art event we’re calling WATER CITY – Deputy Artistic Director Sarah Cameron Sunde is curating a batch of art works to run concurrently, including a video installation of her own amazing 36.5 / a durational performance with the sea (check it out if you haven’t, it really is amazing)…
…and although Sheila and Daniella have been working on WATER for a while, having production in sight, a new collaborative team, being back at 3LD and the many ways the global water crisis has impacted our lives since the piece’s original iterations have all inspired a complete re-boot. We’re using our 3-week residency this June to build WATER pretty much from the ground up: devise its structure, create video, audio and set materials, generate text, play with tools and technology, and just otherwise prepare ourselves for next year.
Join us for an Open Studio celebrating our work this month, a casual opportunity to chat with Daniella and our team over cocktails, take a look at what they’re working on – and prepare for next year, the deluge.
